This rosé is bursting with strawberries, raspberries and a slight hint of bakery on the nose. Smooth and round in the mouth, this dry, savoury style is all about the long lunch and pre-siesta slurping.

A rosé made from 100% Monastrell grown in Castaño’s family vineyards situated in the North of Yecla at 750m above sea level, meaning the grapes retain a beautiful freshness. Bright red fruits on the nose, the palate is soft, with vibrant acidity and a long finish.

The Castaño Monastrell Rosado is grown in the Castaño family vineyards, situated in the north of Yecla located at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level. The vineyards are dry-farmed and the vines are grown on poor, limestone soil. The roots of the vines therefore grow deep into the earth in search for precious minerals and nutrients, which in turn helps to ensure healthy, ripe, flavoursome grapes. The Monastrell vineyards are over 50 years old.

Extreme weather was seen across the wine world in 2017 and Spain was no exception. For most Spanish regions there were one or more climatic challenges to contend with including spring frost, drought, unusually high summer temperatures and occasional hail storms. For the vines in Yecla, drought was the major issue in 2017, with no rain falling between March and August. Older vines and bush vines with deep roots coped better with the extreme weather, something which proved good from Monastrell, Castaño’s principal variety. Luckily, a welcome spell of rain fell during the first week of September, allowing the vines to complete the ripening process. Overall grape quality was high with healthy bunches of smaller berries showing intense flavours and excellent concentration. Yields are down approximately 30% on 2016.

The wine is made 100% from Monastrell. The grapes underwent a direct pressing without maceration on the skins. Fermentation took place at 16C in stainless steel and underwent cold stabilisation before bottling.

Castaño is a family-run operation led by Ramón Castaño who, in 1950, built a modern winery designed to showcase the region's famous Monastrell grape variety. At the time, Ramón's daring approach to transform traditional and conservative winemaking practices was considered bold but drawing upon generations of family winemaking history the results speak for themselves and the world is listening. Ramón's three sons are now involved in the business as they continue to expand and experiment with Monastrell and various blends that showcase the grape's special synergy with emerging D.O. Yecla in the South East of Spain.

Would be amazing with a seafood paella!
