Textural and complex and unlike anything we have done before. Wonderful aromas of fresh lime, eucalyptus and hot sandy soil, there is a slightly rocky, dried lemon peel flavour but most of all a taut, precise layered palate with bright acidity and real breadth. Beautiful now, this might just have a life span to match the current age of the vineyard. A bottled drop of time and place, hand-made in Africa.

There is an even dustier kloof in the already dusty Swartland where a block of Semillon has been struggling, unirrigated, since 1966. It’s a scrubby old bush-vine vineyard owned by a barefoot farmer called Barry (fondly referred to as ‘Barefoot Barry’). In this hot and dusty place these vines seem to have found their balance – keeping low against the sun and shading their precious grapes, the sandy soil helping to keep them disease free. The roots however have dug deep into the soil and discovered a thirst quenching aquifer (underground river). The grapes were picked by Marinda.

Made by Marinda Kruger-Van Eck from grapes that she has hand-harvested herself, towed to our host winery (the fabulous garagiste haven at Zorgvliet parked under the Simonsberg Mountain), table-selected, hand-pigeaged, listened-to, caressed, bottled and applied the labels. 100% wild-ferment in 600lt finely grained, new French oak demi-muids, chosen by our Rhone winemaker, Eric Monnin.

Registered Single Vineyward Project offers a range of wines driven by provenance, elegance and a touch of sophisticated seduction. Single varietal wines from registered single vineyard and unirrigated plots, they are highly expressive, truly terroir, and ooze quality with a capital quality! These wines are hand-made, naturally fermented and aged in fine grained French oak demi-muids (600lt barrels) before bottling unfined and only very gently filtered. Despite their pedigree, these highly acclaimed wines are very approachable and accessible.
