Dark, opaque violet colour this is a very intense and concentrated wine.  Classic Cabernet in style, aromas of ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and plum fruits with hints of tobacco, sweet spice and vanilla from the french oak.  A rich palate displays flavours of cassis and spicy notes.

Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is an assemblage created from historic rows within the family’s estate vineyards in Luján de Cuyo, Tupungato and Altamira. If you want to get super geeky, it comes from Lot 3 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Lot 2 of the Domingo vineyard and Lot 2 of the Nicasia vineyard. The subtle differences in the terroir of these lots imparts a rich complexity to the wine, as does the 18 months in French oak barrels. Think of it as all the instruments in an orchestra coming together to create a symphony. This is a wine of elegance, finesse and freshness, brimming with crème de cassis, cocoa, tobacco and sophisticated spices; a masterpiece in classic Cabernet Sauvignon (with just a splash of the highly underrated Cabernet Franc). Stock up with an original wooden case of six bottles.

Catena Zapata was named “The World’s Most Admired Wine Brand 2020” by Drinks International. Established in 1902, the bodega played a pioneering role in the explosion of Malbec and in exploring extreme high-altitude winemaking. Nicolás Catena Zapata, a former Decanter Man of the Year, is widely credited with putting Argentinean wine on the world map and should be placed on a level with the likes of Robert Mondavi in Napa and Angelo Gaja in Piedmont. It is “the most important winery in Argentina” according to Wine Advocate, who also notes that: “the name Catena on the label is a guarantee of quality.” The winery is now run by Dr Laura Catena, the fourth-generation vintner and a graduate of both Harvard and Stanford Universities, who is fast becoming the face of Argentinian wine. When she’s not making wine or writing books, she is a part-time physician of Emergency Medicine in San Francisco – a suitably remarkable winemaker for an equally remarkable estate.

Before the world recognized Catena’s Argentina as “malbec country”, the winery was known for its old-world style Cabernet Sauvignon born in the clay-soils of Agrelo. The family cherishes its historic Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Agrelo and Tupungato, particularly for their ageability and classic flavors. Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Lot 3 of the La Pirámide vineyard, Lot 2 of the Domingo vineyard and Lot 2 of the Nicasia Vineyard. Elevage: 18 months in French oak barrels.

Vineyard lots are harvested at different times to ensure optimal natural acidity and moderate alcohol levels. Whole berries are hand loaded into small format fermentation bins and 225-500 L barrels; lots are treated individually; fermentation and maceration last for 28-30 days. Wild yeasts. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged for 18 months. French oak.

Catena Alta is an assemblage of historic rows within the Catena family Estate vineyards. The blend of these historic rows, like the marriage of sounds that create a symphony, yields a highly aromatic and elegant wine that speaks for the earth and the vines that have been tended by the Catenas for four generations. The Catena Alta wines can usually be drunk starting at three years after harvest and into the following one to two decades.
