A soft textured expression of Shiraz from the slurp factory of the Barossa. Brimming with luscious dark berry fruits, this wine has been matured in 40% new French oak hogsheads for 20 months sur lie to further enhance its texture. A wine for hedonists, so enjoy it now, or in 10 to 15 years time if you have a puritanical streak.

Fat of the Land is a celebration of Barossa. This region is famed for the diversity of the Shiraz produced in each of its sub-regions, and First Drop revel in this by taking grapes from the finest single vineyards and using them to create their flagship range. Lifted black fruit aromas with a hint of cola and spice. Plush, textured and brimming with luscious black fruits and chocolate with hints of Indian spice. Rich and big breasted, like Dolly Parton.

The Barossa is an amazing place with a diverse history from which a great community has grown living o the Fat of the Land. Famed for its Shiraz vineyards, some dating back to the 19th century, the wines from this small, but proud region are as unique and divergent as its history and community. One can make such varied expressions of Shiraz, due to the different meso-climates of each subregion, the elevation range, and the myriad of soil types that are tobe found throughout the Barossa. The Fat of the Land series seeks to showcase the sub regions of the Barossa, and the contrasting styles of Shiraz that can be made here.

A condensed vintage with full fat flavour! Déjà vu?! A warmer than usual spring and early summer led to quick healthy growth and a good fruit set. Together with a dry season, this led to an early start to vintage despite mild conditions and welcome rainfall in January. As a result, although harvest progressed quickly, phenology kept pace with sugar levels, leading to full flavoured wines with good acidity and ripe tannins. The hallmark of the vintage is its consistency across the board (reminiscent of 2012). A fantastic follow up to 2015. Same same but different!

Set up by Essex boy Matt Gant and South Australian John Retsas, First Drop is part winery and part frivolous merrymaking in a ginormous warehouse abandoned by Penfolds. This duo crafts grapes grown by their friends into fun-loving and easy-going wines with remarkable distinction and texture. They also do this without using animal products in the fining process, making the entire range vegan-friendly.

"A pretty hedonistic expression of shiraz showing tons of chocolate-coated blackberries, ivy and violet extract, bark, mocha-infused oak, eucalyptus and tar. Full body, tons of black fruit, ripe and very chewy tannins and a fruit-forward finish that remains in check. Drink in 2025."
94 Points, James Suckling

"Crushed and destemmed, closed fermenters, cultured yeast, cold soak, 12 days on skins, fermentation finished in French hogsheads (20% new), 20 months maturation. Dense crimson-purple; it's full-bodied, velvety and rich, dark chocolate an important part of this vinous merry-go-round, the finish with an unexpected sparkle of finesse, likely a farewell present from the French oak."
95 Points, James Halliday
