A muscular brooding expression of Barossa Shiraz. It’s flavour packed with kirsch, dark chocolate and liquorice. This wine has been matured in 40% new French oak hogsheads for 20 months to further enhance its inherent structure. Built for ageing not for speed, have another look at this sleeper in 10 to 15 years time.

Fat of the Land is a celebration of Barossa. This region is famed for the diversity of the Shiraz produced in each of its sub-regions, and First Drop revel in this by taking grapes from the finest single vineyards and using them to create their flagship range. This one hails from Seppeltsfield in the west of the Barossa, and a vineyard owned by their mate Darren. They age it for 20 months in oak, the nectar that gets filled into the bottles after that time is an energetic concoction of strawberry jam, tangy raspberry, cherry liqueur, desiccated coconut, prunes, chilli, Bassett’s Liquorice Allsorts and bacon, or maybe more accurately Frazzles. It’s an absolutely riveting wine and so different from the Ebenezer version.

The Barossa is an amazing place with a diverse history from which a great community has grown living o the Fat of the Land. Famed for its Shiraz vineyards, some dating back to the 19th century, the wines from this small, but proud region are as unique and divergent as its history and community. One can make such varied expressions of Shiraz, due to the different meso-climates of each subregion, the elevation range, and the myriad of soil types that are tobe found throughout the Barossa. The Fat of the Land series seeks to showcase the sub regions of the Barossa, and the contrasting styles of Shiraz that can be made here.

A condensed vintage with full fat flavour! Déjà vu?! A warmer than usual spring and early summer led to quick healthy growth and a good fruit set. Together with a dry season, this led to an early start to vintage despite mild conditions and welcome rainfall in January. As a result, although harvest progressed quickly, phenology kept pace with sugar levels, leading to full flavoured wines with good acidity and ripe tannins. The hallmark of the vintage is its consistency across the board (reminiscent of 2012). A fantastic follow up to 2015. Same same but different!

Set up by Essex boy Matt Gant and South Australian John Retsas, First Drop is part winery and part frivolous merrymaking in a ginormous warehouse abandoned by Penfolds. This duo crafts grapes grown by their friends into fun-loving and easy-going wines with remarkable distinction and texture. They also do this without using animal products in the fining process, making the entire range vegan-friendly.

"Another very ripe shiraz that remains attractive and delicious. So much blackberries that it’s almost hard to fathom. Dark cherry liqueur and dark plum cake and infusion, too. Sweetly scented milk chocolate throughout. Although restrained wouldn’t be the right word, this is actually quite elegant considering the fruit and how it manages to trade in floral territory between layers of ripe, lithe tannins. A chewy finish."

"Significantly lighter and more developed than most of its siblings, chocolate a contributor to the spicy, slippery, medium-bodied palate. In any other context, would look very good indeed, here it's the odd man out."
93 Points, James Halliday
