“The right to veto is surely a father’s prerogative. Working with my two sons, Tom and Sam, gives me great pleasure but every now and then I like to challenge them by exercising my right. Fortunately, in developing these wines, no such interference was needed. The only thing we did not agree on was the name but I vetoed them on that.” Peter Barry

For a number of years, we have waited for a vintage that presented the opportunity to create wines that could comfortably sit in our brand ladder between Lodge Hill and McRae Wood Shiraz and Cover Drive and First Eleven Cabernet Sauvignon. Vintage 2013 gave us that chance.

We picked small parcels of exceptional fruit we had identified in the vineyard and vinified the wines in our micro-winery at Jim Barry. Our aim was to make wines showing more concentration than Lodge Hill and Cover Drive without the intensity of McRae Wood and First Eleven.

The Shiraz was sourced from a small block at Lodge Hill vineyard in the eastern ranges of Clare. A cooler site, also excellent for Riesling, the fruit retains a zesty natural acid and seems to produce a more elegant style of red wine.

Winemaking Notes
Darkens the glass with a bold inky magenta hue. Reveals notes of moschino cherry, satsuma plum and blackberry with a touch of black olives and cloves. A luscious earthy palate with dark vine fruits and chalky fine grained tannins. Opens up in the glass to display floral/violet notes and bright purple fruits. The Veto Shiraz was matured in American and French oak for 9 months before being bottled. The combination of early picking to maximise freshness of fruit and shorter than usual storage in wood has produced a medium bodied wine of intense fresh flavour and soft tannins.

Wine has been flowing in the Clare Valley since 1851 and is an integral part of the culture. It is one of Australia’s most prestigious premium wine regions famous for its Riesling and Shiraz. A tiny area accounting for less than 1.5% of the total Australian production.

With its beautiful rolling hills, ideal winter rainfall and Mediterranean climate, Clare Valley carries a unique history and winemaking heritage.

94 Points
Grown on the Lodge Hill vineyard. It takes brutality and covers it in cotton wool. The core is strong, intense, all saturated plum and coffee grounds. But the edges are softer, spicier, creamier, even fractionally leafy. The core will keep it going for many a year; the edges make it attractive now.
