Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to offer the very best Champagne every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Each year, the House of Krug honours this dream with a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the fullest expression of Champagne.
This bottle spent at least 9 years in Krug’s cellars to develop its particular expression and elegance, receiving its cork in winter 2015-2016.
Every year since the foundation of the House of Krug, a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée is created to offer the fullest expression of Champagne.
This bottle belongs to the 163ème Édition, a blend of 183 wines from 12 different years. The youngest dates back to 2007 and the oldest to 1990. Every glass poured from it is the fruit of more than 25 years of patience and careful craftsmanship.
Krug Grande Cuvée 163ème Édition was composed around the harvest of 2007. A year that defied all possible predictions, the extremes of 2007 pushed us to rethink everything we thought we knew. We had to challenge ourselves, to look with fresh eyes at what each individual plot of vines could give us. The early harvest revealed grapes with powerful aromas and discreet flavours. Krug’s unique respect for the individual character of each plot enabled the House to discern the strong potential of a number of lesser-known plots to enhance the blend while wines from plots in Villers, Trépail, Mareuil and Ambonnay proved to be the foremost contributors to this singular creation. As a result, the wines of the year shine through, making up 73% of the final blend, which is quite a unique composition in the history of the House as the three principal Champagne grape varieties are present in almost equal parts. A select number of carefully chosen reserve wines from 11 previous years ensure the breadth, depth, roundness, finesse and elegance so essential to every Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée.
The final composition of this bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is 37% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay and 31% Meunier.
Chef de Caves, Krug
As you taste it, notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar and jellied fruits may take you by surprise. You may even taste hints of apples still on the tree, flowers in bloom, ripe and dried fruit, almonds, marzipan, gingerbread, sweet spices and even brioche and honey.
You may also notice its exceptional freshness in the mouth, with rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant bubbles. Krug Grande Cuvée can age beautifully.
