Our Sauvignon Blanc pushes the boundaries of the typical New Zealand flavour profile. By highlighting floral aromatics and tropical flavours such as guava and melon-like fruit, we tone down the grassiness and bring a creamy mid-palate all the way through to a fresh and bright crispness on the finish. We have set a new precedent for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

Beautiful wine comes from a beautiful place. Mt. Beautiful wines are the expression of the wild, rugged and breathtakingly scenic region of North Canterbury. Certified-sustainable and estate-grown, these distinctively restrained wines let the pure terroir shine through. Only seven miles from the ocean, the vineyards are protected from harsh sea winds by their benevolent namesake, Mt. Beautiful. World-renowned scholar/entrepreneur and New Zealand native David Teece, together with his wife Leigh, spent two years searching for just this spot, where they could pioneer an undiscovered region and fulfill their dream of bringing the best of New Zealand to the world. Mt. Beautiful is the first vineyard of a commercial size to be planted outside of an established New Zealand region in 20 years.

Mt. Beautiful wines are not only different from most New Zealand wines by way of their North Canterbury location, but they are also different in style. The wine style captures the essence of New Zealand while embracing a more restrained approach, with harmony and balance.

The majority of the Sauvignon Blanc is planted on the most northern part of the vineyard which is cooler and more suited to this variety. All of our Sauvignon Blanc is hand-thinned and machine harvested before it is pressed into juice on site.

The planted clones are a mix of University of California Davis (UCD) 1 and Mass selection (MS) on a mix of 101-14, 3309 and Schwarzmann rootstock, with a quarter of the vines Bordeaux clones BDX 316 and BDX 317, on Riparia Gloire rootstock. The Bordeaux clones tend to give a definite lift to Sauvignon Blanc flavours, with less cut grass and more tropical flavours providing a more artisan style, balanced, elegant wine which complements a range of foods.

Pair Mt. Beautiful Sauvignon Blanc with rocket and feta salad, pasta carbonara or freshly shucked oysters on a sunny day.

The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc has great aromatic power with aromas of violet, fresh pear, and white stone fruits. On the palate, this wine is generous and full-bodied with lush stone and passion fruits. A creamy mouthfeel is balanced by a crisp citrus acid drive and great length of flavor.
#60 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2019

"Medium-gold in color, this North Canterbury Sauvignon leads with a heady nose of guava, lychee, and pineapple, with soft aromas of grass and tomato leaf. There's a nice play on the palate between texture and prickly acidity, with plenty of tropical fruit and a long finish. It makes for an apt pairing with summery cuisine."
90 Points, Wine Enthusiast

"Offers an appealing core of intense, lush flavors of ripe melon and peach, with details of white pepper, honeysuckle and ruby grapefruit lingering on the finish. Impressive for the intensity and focus. Drink now."
90 Points, Wine Spectator

"Quite a serious sauvignon with good weight and a pleasingly rich texture. A hint of tropical fruit with melon, nectarine and nutty yeast lees flavours. Dry but not austere. A good food wine."
92 Points, Bob Campbell
