Flavours of spice and ripe plums on the bouquet and palate with an undertow of brulée’d sugar. Gentle soft tannins and a creamy finish.
Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa with a recorded history dating back to 1692, Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. As custodians of this impressive heritage, caring for their land and the surrounding environment is at the very heart of everything they do. Spier is a member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative and is committed to re-establishing the rare plant life of their lands. This investment in terroir not only ensures the sustainability of surrounding areas, but guarantees that they get the best grapes from each vineyard block. While rooted in this heritage, Spier has a vibrant and conscious energy. The winery is one of the most awarded in the country. Spier is not just a great destination, however. Our passion for quality and sustainability touches everything we do. Our ethos – which we call the Spier Way – is the connecting thread: at Spier it is all about balance. The farm boasts 21 Dutch gables that date from 1767 to 1822, a wine cellar that’s said to be the first in South Africa, and an extensive range of wines that boast multiple awards. According to winemaker Frans Smit – top quality grapes from prime vineyards are the essential building blocks for premium wine, and expressing the very best from the South African terroir. His philosophy is to get the most out of each grape with as little interference as possible.
These vineyards are planted up to 80 km from the coast with geographical influence from mountains and the cold Atlantic coast. Complexity is achieved by blending these different regional wines.
Grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness, gently crushed and de-stemmed to stainless-steel tanks. Fermentation lasted up to 12 days on the skins. A portion of the wine (20%) was transferred to neutral barrels and the balance to stainless-steel tanks with French-oak staves for malolactic fermentation and maturation. The wine matured for a minimum of 12 months before blending.
Spicy, ripe plum flavours, easygoing tannins and a creamy aftertaste make this your red wine go-to. Add sparkle to even the most humdrum of pizzas (yes, even Hawaiian!). This Shiraz is also gorgeous with korma curry or mildly spiced rogan josh, or fire-cooked hamburgers with bacon and cheddar cheese.
