Violet, white pepper and thyme aromas lead into a palate that is full and rounded. Plum, cassis and bramble flavours give way to an attractive savoury character so often seen in good Syrah. The tannins are well balanced and provide structure for this attractive and mouthfilling wine.

Fruit for this wine came from a vineyard situated inland west of Hastings on an old riverbed.  Hand harvested fruit was destemmed but not crushed into closed fermenters where whole-berries soaked for up to seven days before a natural ferment kicked off. The wine was then pumped over up to three times a day at the height of ferment. Post ferment it was rested for three weeks on skin to advance and condense the tannin structure making the wine more approachable and supple. The wine was pressed and run to barrel where it was matured for 14 months in new and used French oak before it was blended and lightly egg white fined.

Rod McDonald Wines is a family-owned wine business born out of a love of making wine and of the place they call home, Hawke’s Bay. Winemaker Rod McDonald spent nine years as winemaker at Vidal Estate in Hawke’s Bay and was awarded New Zealand Winemaker of the Year in 2006. He left later that year with a few ideas about what Hawke’s Bay wines could be like, and started Rod McDonald Wines to prove it.

In 2006 he began searching for great vineyard sites that would eventually supply the grapes to make the great wines. One of Hawke’s Bay’s greatest strengths is its geographical and climatic diversity. The varied landscape provides an environment to grow a number of different varieties for an array of wine styles.

Rod and his team have chosen some of Hawke’s Bay’s greatest vineyard sites from the coast at Te Awanga, to the valley floor at Bridge Pa, and finally their most inland site at Maraekakaho. They grow Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc at the coast and the maritime climate ensures a bright acidity and long growing season. Bridge Pa brings Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah as these are the hottest blocks ripening grapes fully. At their highest and most inland vineyard at Maraekakaho, they grow Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Te Awanga is a special piece of dirt.

Planted 25 years ago by a group of friends in one of Hawke’s Bay’s oldest wine growing areas, they dreamt of making the region’s greatest wines.  We’re still working on that, but believe our vineyard by the coast truly captures something unique.

Here’s to the mighty Te Awanga.

Delicious with grilled venison, rich pasta dishes or slow-roasted lamb.
