Pale straw with medium intensity, gold hues and a silver rim.

Very powerful aromatics due to the heat of the season. Full flavours of lime and nectarine. Hints of honey and golden syrup.

Intense flavours of lime with a fresh palate and clean structure. Textural, chalky acid with lean lines. Vibrant and zippy, moving through to a long, lingering finish.

From the 2019 vintage, two small parcels from the Koerner vineyard, ‘G1’ and ‘G4’ blocks stood out for their unique character and potential for ageing, and were kept separate from the main Watervale blend. These blocks have an east-west row orientation and a gentle north facing aspect. The vineyard sits at approximately 390m above sea level from top to bottom. 2019 was an extremely challenging year with low spring temperatures, high summer temperatures, frost, heat waves, high winds and hail. Despite this, the Riesling from the Clare Valley showed an amazing resilience and wines produced have great natural acidity and delicate flavours.

The grapes were harvested on the 2nd of March with the fruit being taken immediately to Watervale for pressing to avoid extended skin contact and over extraction of phenolics. Made using the classic methods of the great John Vickery, light pressings material was included to develop structure and longevity, but finessed to avoid excessive extraction or bitterness. Fermented took place in inert stainless steel for 25 days at cool temperatures. The wine was caressed into bottle on the 19th of September 2019, to mature in our temperature controlled cellar until deemed appropriate for release

John Vickery is the acknowledged old master of Riesling in Australia, with an illustrious career spanning over fifty years, culminating in the extraordinary awards tally of more than fifty Trophies and over four hundred Gold Medals. The Rieslings he crafted from Watervale (in the Clare Valley) and Eden Valley (in the Barossa) stand tall as the epitome of this most majestic grape variety, each with a unique South Australian and sub-regional thumbprint. Vickery wines are made in collaboration with our talented winemaking team, so that John’s winemaking methods and knowledge will be preserved and passed on for generations to come, for the benefit of all lovers of classic Australian Riesling.
