The Château Meyney vineyard is planted with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot on a perfectly drained siliceous gravel soil, ideal conditions for the maturity of the grapes. The grape varieties are supplemented with 10% Petit Verdot, an atypical percentage for Saint-Estèphe, which explains the special cachet of the wines where notes of leather and musk develop regularly over time. The wine is ample, fleshy and structured, aged with attention to detail. When ripe, it will develop the inimitable charm of the great Saint-Estèphe wines: complexity, harmony, balance.
The 2020 vintage opened with a very rainy and mild winter which immediately laid the foundations for an early vintage. The talent of the teams at the château was therefore put to the test of a very rapidly evolving vine cycle. Thanks to its great know-how, the estate has succeeded in enhancing, with its work, the solar, spicy, unctuous but also fresh and tight character of grapes, offering a wine bearing the signature style of the greatest vintages.
'The 2020 Meyney has a lively, quite powerful nose delivering plenty of blackberry, boysenberry and briar scents, plus touches of freshly tilled loam and wilted iris flower; I appreciate how forthright this is. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins and graphite-laced blackberry. Quite citric toward the finish, showing Pauillac-like pretentions. This is a classy Saint-Estèphe from Meyney that will age with style. Drink 2025 - 2045.' - Neal Martin 91-93 Points
