Already known for our world-class Shiraz, it seems our Chardonnay is Hartenberg’s next star with it’s consistency in ratings and awards.
Nestled in a valley on the free-draining, north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, Hartenberg enjoys a Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters.
Vineyards face north, west, and east, with varietals planted to take advantage of either morning or afternoon sun. There is a difference in altitude of some 250 metres between the northern and southern vineyards.
Grapes were handpicked in the early morning of each of the 4 days of picking so as to capture the subtle primary flavours that the variety offers. Every batch from each of the morning picks as well as those of the individual parcels were kept separate in the cellar so as to aid quality selection when it came to assembling the final blend.
Fermented and matured for 12 months in French Oak (225 l) 15% new, 33% in second fill, with the balance in third fill barrels.
Our Chardonnay is always bottled in summer, after filtering.
Excellent with cream based foods, smoked chicken or duck, seared tuna with olive oil, lime juice and black pepper.
