Made from Sciacarello, a traditional Corsican grape variety, this rose petal pink coloured softer style rosé emanates exotic characters. With a clean, fresh, earthy and aromatic nose of sweet creamy fruit, these characters follow through to a palate which has a hint of strawberry mousse and ripe fruit flavours. Quite different to Provence rosé's, this is more of an aperitif style wine rather than a food accompaniment. It is well balanced with some complexity, good length and structure.
Domaine Fiumicicoli (pronounced phew-me-chikoli) lies at the heart of AOC Corse Sartène, considered to be one of the best of Corsica's nine appellations and close to where the 13th century Genoese bridge, Pont de Spina Cavallu (pictured on their wine labels) spans the river Rizzanesse. The Domaine’s vineyards rise up from the slopes of the river on arenaceous and granitic soil ideally suited to growing the traditional Corsican grape varieties of Sciacarello (from which the Domaine makes their rosés), Vermentino (for whites) and Nielluccio (for their reds, usually blended with a little Syrah). Temperatures are slightly cooler in this mountainous south-western corner of the Island and proximity to the sea adds a further cooling influence. The 75 hectare estate was founded by Felix Andreani and is now run by his son Simon using organic principles. Cool and drying winds - the Mistral, Libecciu, Tramontane, Gregale and Sirocco – blow through the vineyards playing a regulating and purifying role that enables Felix and Simon to farm without resorting to herbicides and pesticides. Domaine Fiumicicoli make elegant, aromatic white and rosé and a characterful red wine and also specialise in a unique dessert wine made from the native Corsican Muscateddu grape.
Vineyards rise up from the slopes of the river on sandy / granitic soil ideally suited to growing the traditional Corsican grape varieties of Sciaccarello, Vermentino and Niellucciu (with some Syrah). Founder Fèlix Andreani manages the 75 hectare vineyard with his son Simon. Vineyards are tended manually and, due to the proximity to the sea, benefit from the slightly cooler temperatures in this south west corner of Corsica. Occasionally one of the five winds - the Mistral, Libecciu, Tramontane, Gregale and Sirocco - blow through the vineyards, playing a regulating and purifying role, allowing Fèlix and Simon to avoid the use of herbicides and pesticides. The wine is part of the 'Ecocert' group, indicating that the grapes have organically farmed. Also carrying the French AB (Agriculture Biologique) organic certification, to qualify for which the product must carry over 95% organic components.
A basket press is used to produce the juice, which is settled with the addition of enzymes, at 10C for 12 hours. Yeast is added and fermentation is controlled at a temperature of 16-18 °C, which lasts about 12 to 18 days.
A great match for shellfish, salmon, or drink it by itself chilled on a warm summers evening.
