Telmo Rodríguez's Basa Blanco is a refreshing white wine blend of native grape varieties Verdejo (90%) and Viura (10%), sourced from the Rueda region of Spain, and is consistently regarded as one of Spain's and the world's best value white wines. The intense floral aromatics, freshness and wonderful texture are the result of the high elevation plantings in lime and gravel soils, with good drainage. Basa derives its name from its red counterpart Baso, itself named after the country’s ancient 'Baso' (goblet) shaped bush-vines. Packed with crisp, clean yellow plum and white peach flavours.
Telmo Rodríguez, of Remelluri fame, is one of Spains' greatest winemakers. He made a name for himself when he started his own wine business in the 1990s with fellow winemaker Pablo Eguzkiza. Together their vision for Compañia de Vinos was to soley work with native grape varieties and revive forgotten or abandoned vineyards in various regions throughout Spain. With Spain only slowly starting to recognise and explore the beauty in its indigenous grape varieties, Telmo and his dedicated team have long been ahead of their game. They closely work with local growers creating unique wines with a genuine sense of place. The journey thus far has seen them take on board some 355 little plots across 80 hectares in total, working with 43 different varieties of native grapes.
Makes a great match for Spanish omelettes and tapas.
