This Taylor’s Historical series is a collection of specially blended cask-aged Ports presented in exclusive bespoke bottles inspired by historic bottle mould.
A deep, reddish-brown core is framed by a slender brick-red rim. The nose, rich and mature, opens with inviting aromas of coffee, butterscotch, and dried fruit, complemented by hints of plum and raisin. Surrounding this sumptuous heart are delicate layers of spice, wood, and nuttiness, as well as subtle floral notes, offering the wine a refined, intricate, and alluring complexity. On the palate, it is full-bodied and dense, with a smooth, velvety texture. The flavours of indulgent toffee and preserved fruit linger, leading to a long, warming finish. This wine is a stunning representation of the traditional craft of cask ageing and blending, with each element harmoniously integrated to enhance both aroma and flavour.
Crafted from a carefully selected blend of Port wines drawn from Taylor’s extensive tawny reserves, The Globe embodies the hallmark richness and complexity that Taylor’s is renowned for. The blend has been meticulously curated to deliver a balanced and harmonious profile, offering a distinct, robust finish that is a direct result of the company’s legendary aging process in seasoned oak casks.
Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries the shape of the wine bottle was in continuous development. It gradually evolved from the squat globular form of early glass vessels, used to convey wine from the wine merchant’s cask to the consumer’s table, into the tall cylindrical shape of today’s bottles in which wine can be cellared and aged. The Historical collection Limited Edition series represents different stages in this evolution.Taylor’s launches a limited edition of a Reserve Tawny Port to pay homage to its long history of pioneering and passion.
This bottle was inspired by the‘shaft and globe’shape of early English wine bottles. These spherical bottles were prevalent in the mid-17th century and were mouth blown rather than made in moulds.
By this time, English bottles were made using coal fuel which generated higher temperatures than earlier wood burning furnaces. This produced stronger bottles with thicker sides which could be used for storage as well as simply as serving vessels. In the second half of the 17th century, the‘shaft and globe’bottle gradually evolved into the ‘onion’ bottle, in use around the time of Taylor’s foundation in 1692, whose neck was shorter and body more squat in shape.
This wine is ready to drink and does not require decanting. The bottle should be kept upright, protected from light and at a cool and constant temperature.
The wine benefits from being served slightly chilled, between 12ºC to 16ºC. The particular qualities of this wine allow it to be enjoyed over an extended period of time once opened, without losing its freshness and vibrancy. Optimum drinking time after opening the bottle is two months.
Taylor Fladgate Historical Collection IV - The Globe is a superb dessert wine, pairing beautifully with the flavours of almonds, berries, or dark chocolate. It also complements rich, blue veined cheeses wonderfully. Ideal at the conclusion of a meal, it serves as the perfect finale to a delightful evening, whether enjoyed on its own or alongside a plate of walnuts or roasted almonds.
