Despite a year fraught with challenges, the 2020 vintage is tipped as the estate's best yet, showcasing not only quality grapes and excellent conditions but also exceptional vineyard management.

Vibrant fruits are balanced by a freshness that is distinctly Cloudy Bay in style. As well as being a delightful wine to sip now, this zesty, well-balanced sauvignon blanc will cellar well.

Though the year itself presented many unusual challenges, the weather was on the estate's side. The days were filled with sunshine followed by cool nights, allowing for a slow and steady harvest. Fermentation took place mainly in stainless steel tanks, with four per cent of the blend being transferred to French oak barriques and larger oak barrels.

This year’s vintage will be memorable for the unusual times under which the wine was made as well as the incredible conditions provided by mother nature in the vineyards throughout the year.

Quoting Jim White – Cloudy Bay’s Technical Director: “The 2020 vintage release is everything a Cloudy Bay Sauvignon should be, concentrated and vibrant, with beautiful citrus and stone fruit characters, but also that certain subtlety and poise that has built its renown around the globe.”

Cloudy Bay was established in 1985 by David Hohnen, a pioneer and visionary, who was convinced of New Zealand wines' great potential. The winery was among the first five to be established in Marlborough, the country's finest wine region, and is now highly regarded for the superlative quality and consistency of its wines. Thirsty years later, Cloudy Bay remains New Zealand's most recognised winery and Sauvignon Blanc is the Estate's flagship grape variety.

Cloudy Bay are foundation members of Appellation Marlborough Wine, an organisation designed to protect the integrity, autheticity and brand value of wines producsed in Marlborough. Sauvignon made under the AMW banner must be 100% from Marlborough, be made from lower-yielding vines, and be made and bottled in New Zealand.

This wine will bring perfect balance to a rich and flavourful dish of fresh-caught langoustines, adding a touch of lightness.

Review by Bob Campbell MW:
“Intense and quite weighty sauvignon blanc with passionfruit, lime zest, gooseberry, red and green capsicum and subtle oyster-shell flavours, supported by deliciously tangy acidity that drives a lengthy finish.”

James Suckling Review by Nick Stock:
“A fresh, creamy-textured white with lots of freshness and lovely pear and green-apple character. Some white pineapple. It’s medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a flavourful finish. Less herbs and more clean, ripe fruit.”
