It’s time to meet the Cloudy Bay 2021 Sauvignon Blanc.

From a stellar vintage that we will remember for low yields but perfect growing conditions, this year’s wine is exceptionally expressive, vibrant and intense.

Nikolai St. George, senior winemaker, says the 2021 Sauvignon Blanc is truly something special.

“This year in particular it is incredibly aromatic, and the low yields mean that it’s rich and weighty on the palate. When you sip that glass of Sauvignon Blanc 2021, you are tasting the perfect example of a ‘classic vintage’.”

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc is intense and vibrant. The nose is open, appealing and expressive, with ripe passionfruit, white peach and a hint of lime.

The palate is deliciously concentrated and tropical, underpinned by nectarine and blossoms. Saline notes bring structure, while passionfruit and vibrant citrus acidity bring balance. The compelling finish encourages you to take another sip, and then another. It also hints at the rewards of keeping a bottle aside for a future special event - if you can wait, that is.

Our vineyard crews had their work cut out for them this year. Budburst came early across the region, while the cold nights and frosts in September and October meant very early mornings for the crew. Fortunately, the frost protection we have on most of our vineyard sites kept the grape safe. Of course, Mother Nature rarely does things by halves. The challenging conditions continued: unsettled weather during the December flowering period meant good soil conditions, but significant reductions in crop levels. But while she can be stern, Mother Nature can be equally generous - even in the same season. The growing period for 2021 was a continuous thread of beautifully warm, dry conditions, which gave us very little disease pressure to worry about. And, as is often the case, the lower yields had a significant upside: fantastic fruit. The perfect temperatures meant that acid levels remained high, with the grapes developing their full flavour on the vine. The end result is a vintage of outstanding quality and a Sauvignon Blanc with the hallmarks of a future classic.

The Sauvignon Blanc harvest began on 16th March, finishing on 30th March. Following the harvest, the free-run juice was cold settled, before racking and inoculation with selected yeast. Fermentation was carried out primarily in stainless steel tanks, with approximately 4% of the blend fermented at warmer temperatures in old French oak barriques and large format oak vats. As usual, our Sauvignon Blanc was blended stringently to include only the best; in 2021 the final blend comprises 87 different portions.

Cloudy Bay was established in 1985 by David Hohnen, a pioneer and visionary, who was convinced of New Zealand wines' great potential. The winery was among the first five to be established in Marlborough, the country's finest wine region, and is now highly regarded for the superlative quality and consistency of its wines. Thirsty years later, Cloudy Bay remains New Zealand's most recognised winery and Sauvignon Blanc is the Estate's flagship grape variety.

Cloudy Bay are foundation members of Appellation Marlborough Wine, an organisation designed to protect the integrity, authenticity and brand value of wines produced in Marlborough. Sauvignon made under the AMW banner must be 100% from Marlborough, be made from lower-yielding vines, and be made and bottled in New Zealand.

This wine will bring perfect balance to a rich and flavourful dish of fresh-caught langoustines, adding a touch of lightness.

Review by Bob Campbell MW:
“Intense and quite weighty sauvignon blanc with passionfruit, lime zest, gooseberry, red and green capsicum and subtle oyster-shell flavours, supported by deliciously tangy acidity that drives a lengthy finish.”

James Suckling Review by Nick Stock:
“A fresh, creamy-textured white with lots of freshness and lovely pear and green-apple character. Some white pineapple. It’s medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a flavourful finish. Less herbs and more clean, ripe fruit.”
