A lovely example of high altitude Chardonnay from Argentina which has received an exceptional 95 point rating from critics. With prominent notes of apricots, baked apples and vanilla pastry on the nose, it has a beautifully creamy and full bodied mouth feel. Expect a wonderful balance of bright fruity acidity with rounded buttery notes, a hint of oak and a delicious finish.
El Enemigo is a joint venture between winemaker and soil expert Alejandro Vigil and viticulturalist Adrianna Catena. Established in 2008 to focus on crafting cool-climate, high-altitude Cabernet Franc, the estate rapidly rose to stardom following a 100-point score from the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez for their 2013 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Cabernet Franc. It was, along with Catena Zapata’s 2016 Adrianna Vineyard Riverstone Malbec, the first Argentinian wine to achieve this - and they are now some of the country’s most sought-after wines. All the vineyards are at altitude, ranging from 600 to 1,470 metres. The top vineyards are all planted at high density (10,000 vines per hectare). Following harvest, the grapes undergo a five-day cold maceration before being barrel-fermented, often incorporating significant amounts of whole-bunch clusters (up to 30%). The wine is then aged in 100-year-old oak foudres. Today the estate produces 15 different cuvées.
