A lovely rich wine from the volcanic soils of Mount Etna in Sicily. A unique red, between the full bodied character of Barolo and the silky touches of Pinot Noir! Flavours of dark cherry and hints of spice.

Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes grown between 650 & 1,000 meters above sea level on the volcanic soils of Mount Etna go into making this exceptional wine. The name Luce Di Lava translates as Light of Lava, in recognition of the vineyard`s unique volcanic soils.

The wine was aged in stainless steel for 24 months, followed by a further 12 months in older French oak barrels and then bottled. The wine was aged in bottle for 6 months before release.

Etna is Europes largest active volcano. The DOC for producing Etna wines is located in the East of Sicily. An area shaped like a crescent moon defines the D.O.C. which is 44,000 hectares in size comprising of over 180 wineries, with a feeling something akin to gold rush fever, as new wineries strive to establish their reputation on this unique terroir. The North and Eastern part of the Etna D.O.C. is the coolest, with altitudes ranging from 400 to 1,000 meters above sea level, which means that harvest for the reds can go on well into mid October. Wine from Etna often have marked acidity and increased aromatics, helped by the large difference between day and night time temperatures which promotes colour, aromas and retains acidity in an otherwise warm region. The Russo family have been on the mountain since 1864 and began bottling their own wines in 1955, a year before the official Etna D.O.C. was created. The family have vineyards in the communes of Cras’a, Piano del Daini, Rampante & Pietramarina in the N.E. of Etna. Wines from the Russo family respect tradition and have a strong sense of place, reflecting this special region.
