Red brick in colour with subtle crimson hues. Profoundly lifted notes of dark cherries, garden blossom and milk chocolate abound, superbly rounded out by French oak spiciness. A melting pot of dark chocolate, cocoa and cherries with a hint of subtle French oak char on the palate, further enhanced by its natural acidity, general freshness and fine natural tannins. A seamless wine.
Prodigal Grenache delivers the single varietal purity that only old vine Grenache can express. Made from a blend of two, sixty year old, single Grenache vineyards from the Watervale sub region of the Clare Valley, Prodigal Grenache is aged for twenty months in older third and fourth fill French oak hogsheads and bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve the variety’s unique character and charm.
Pair with crisp belly of pork with apple and horseraddish. The potential here is at least 8 - 10 years with careful cellaring.
“95 points. Good colour; a vibrant and lively grenache, with the accent on red berry fruit, not Turkish delight, and the medium-bodied palate has good structure and length.”
James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
“I was particularly impressed with Kilikanoon’s complex, reassuringly dry Grenache duo and GSM blend which I had the opportunity to sit with over dinner, hence the longer notes. From two 60 year old Watervale Grenache vineyards Prodigal retains a youthful bright hue and perfumed nose of turkish delight. Creamy, caressing even of mouthfeel, layers of sweet spice (vanilla, cinnamon and sandalwood) and dried lavender infused pomegranate, plum, red berry and cherry fruit flavours are sustained over a long palate by a persistent thread of mineral acidity and subtle pull of sandpaper fine tannins. Very good indeed. With time in glass it’s the minerality, not the fruit, which becomes more pronounced.”
