Friendly Grüner Veltliner offers elegance and finesse, distinctive fruity character and a rewarding finish - Let's get Friendly!

Gruner Veltliner has effected a Cinderellalike transformation over the past few years. This is thanks to the likes of Laurenz V in the Kamptal region of Austria, who produce an elegant, ageworthy style of Gruner that has captivated the international market.

In 2004 Laurenz Moser V partnered with Dieter Hubler and the Schweiger family to form Laurenz V, a wine firm dedicated exclusively to the production of world-class Gruner Veltliner. Focussing entirely on this varietal, they produce several distinct proprietary wines and have played a leading role in communicating the premium qualities of Gruner Veltliner on the world wine stage. Their wines display brisk acidity, with unusually-pronounced concentration of flavour, voluptuous texture and vibrant minerality. They are also remarkably easy to pair with food, complementing everything from seafood, to rich meaty, and spicy dishes.

Terroir and climate are key in Kamptal. The right bank of the river Kamp gives Gruner creaminess and length, and the left bank’s granite and mica-slate accounts for the minerality and freshness of Laurenz V’s classic style. Cold air from the north lowers night-time temperatures to slow the ripening process, which is crucial in producing the concentrated style of Gruner that Laurenz V is so well known for. They also source grapes from trusted growers in the Kremstal region of Lower Austria, where Gruner Veltliner reaches optimal ripeness while retaining its trademark vivacity.

The grapes for the Friendly Grüner are grown in the Kamptal region of Austria. Here, the Grüner Veltliner ripens in granite, gneiss, mica-slate as well as loess soils. And from the neighbouring region to the north, the rugged Waldviertel, blows cool air that substantially lowers night temperatures in the Kamptal; this in turn slows up the ripening process of the grapes. But these conditions are exactly why the wines from this region taste so fresh and fruity. The New World calls the phenomenon "Cool Climate Viticulture". And wines from these cooler regions are highly respected and treasured.

The Kamptal has nearly 4,000 hectares of vineyards. Of these, more than 3/4 is planted with white wine vines, with 2,000 hectares reserved for Grüner Veltliner alone. However, the fantastic potential of the Kamptal is still largely unknown internationally.

Grüner Veltliner is Austria's showpiece grape. It yields concentrated, harmonious wines rich in finesse and with a long life potential. Veltliner wines are reliable in their development. They bring pure enjoyment in their youth, and guarantee utmost drinking pleasure in maturity. Austria represents less than 1% of the world's wine production. Therefore, gaining recognition as a wine country means that a few points must be emphasized. Grüner Veltliner makes up a third of Austria's entire wine production - making it the ideal ambassador for a clear Austrian wine profile - both at home and abroad. Lenz Moser III - the grandfather of Laurenz Maria Moser V. - always propagated this variety, and found it to be an optimal grape for the Lenz Moser Hochkultur, or high culture, vine training system, which he developed.
