Fresh cherry and redcurrant aromas typical of Mencia, with hints of black pepper. Bright, juicy red fruits, balancing acidity and added complexity from the subtle use of French oak - together with smooth rounded tannins - make this wine nicely poised and very drinkable.
The Val de Monterrei is an area of interesting and unique microclimates. It is the only Galician region that lies in the basin of the river Duero. The river Támega, a well-known tributary of the Duero, cuts through the region from north to south, moulding its granitic and slatey landscape. Monterrei cultivates many of the same grapes as those grown in neighbouring regions, such as Godello, Treixadura and Mencía. Pazos del Rey control 25 hectares of vineyard, situated mainly on the valley’s slopes. Here Susana Pérez manages the winemaking team - who have dedicated themselves to teasing out the very best from these complex and exciting grape varieties.
From DO Monterrei, a small zone on the Galician border with Portugal - the area is best known for Godello-based whites, but is also capable of lively, subtle reds from Mencia. This is the main variety of nearby Bierzo, and is thought to be the same variety as Dao's Jaen.
Aged for 5 months in new French oak barrels.
Serve with tapas or pair with grilled and roasted meats.
