The Underworld thrusts a shovel into that unseen land of sticks and stones, of broken bones, the kingdom of roots. Above the ground the vines frilly dance, its buxom sun-drenched bounty is nothing without the sober grind of roots blindly winding into the Earth, the hidden hero of flavour, of place.

There are few finer things than finding a cultivar that not only belongs in modern South Africa but is so phenomenally tasty – its delicately pithy otherness is hard to describe but searching for the right way to describe it is part of the pleasure.

Perdeberg winery located in Paarl in the heart of the Boland of the Western Cape, enjoys one of the finest wine-growing regions of the Cape. Established as a co-operative in 1941, this now privately owned winery lies at the foot of the magnificent Paardeberg Mountain, named after the scores of Cape Mountain Zebra that once roamed this beautiful mountainside. From a domestic perspective, Perderberg is the highest awarded winery in South Africa. The unique composition of the vineyards defines Perdeberg’s inimitable style covering multiple micro-climates, 75% of which are un-irrigated, whilst 50% are un-trellised, yielding a very low average of 7.8 tons per hectare. Cellar Marster, Albertus Louw, reveals "These dry land bush vines create far better fruit concentration than vines subjected to unnatural vineyard practices, like irrigation. The structure and complexity in these smaller berries bring intense colour, added body and passionate flavours. At Perdeberg Winery, we prefer to set trends rather than follow them and we never compromise the exceptional quality of our wines".

'Uncompromising trend setters'

Perdeberg Winery – from poor soils and underground aquifers comes these truly enchanting wines. Dry-land, bush vines capture the intense expressions of topographical typicity, best exemplified in the intensity of their whites and fresh restraint of the reds.

From old vine Piekernierskloof fruit blended with younger Paarl fruit (hence Western Cape). Grenache Blanc belongs in South Africa, where drought-resistant cultivars are the only future for this increasingly dry region. 70% 40 year old unirrigated bush vines from Piekernierskloof plus 30% younger bush vines from Paarl (hence WO Western Cape). The Paarl component has been barrel fermented in 4-6 year old 500L French oak. The remainder has been wild fermented in stainless steel with 5g/l residual sugar to round off the spice a little.
