Complex and full bodied, with rich red and black berry fruit aromas, figs and prunes, complemented with vanilla, smoke and cedar from oak ageing. Smooth and elegant with some mushroom, leather and forest floor notes on the finish.

This blend of the best Tempranillo, Graciano and Manzuelo grapes was aged for 24 months in oak barrels. Resulting in a combination of dark, ripe fruit intensity, cedar and spice complexity and velvety soft tannins.

The Castillo Clavijo range is produced by Bodegas Criadores de Rioja, a Bodegas which typifies twenty-first century Rioja in its careful balancing of tradition and innovation. The winery was established in 2000 with a view to modernise the production of Rioja wines whilst working with the scores of small, local growers to make wines that reflect the quality and history of Rioja.

Accompany it with Roast Lamb, Roast Beef, Steak and Venison.

not quite up to scratch

Having tasted the Reserva for the first time I was blown away by the fact that this was an old style Rioja house which I much prefer. I was looking to buy the Reserva but noticed that you had the Gran Reserva so I opted for that and purchased a case of six. The first bottle proved very difficult to remove the cork as it disintegrated and the wine itself was very slightly 'corked'. It was drunk anyway. I noticed on subsequent bottles that all of the corks were very poor quality which is odd for a country that actually produces corks. I did raise a question about this but to date have not had an answer. Overall the wine is ok but I feel that the bad corks let it down.
